The Ranville war cemetery is situated a short distance from the famous Pegasus Bridge over the Caen canal.  Ranville was the first French village to be liberated in     the early hours of D Day, 6th June 1944, when the bridge was captured  by Airborne Troops who landed alongside in gliders as part of a surprise assault.

Within the cemetery are buried two Favells.  Private  Kenneth Jack Favell of the Gordon Highlanders who died 10th August, aged 19 and Major Edward Vernon Molyneux Favell of the  Oxs & Bucks Light Infantry who died 19th June, aged 22.

Kenneth was the son of Frederick and Fanny Favell of Great Barford, Bedfordshire, where he is also commemorated as simply 'Jack' Favell on a tablet set into the wall of the Great Barford new village hall.  Click here for more information on Edward Vernon.
